## Foam Leveling vs Mudjacking: Which Lasts on Oklahoma Clay?

Foam leveling vs mudjacking on cost, weight, hole size, cure time and how each behaves on the shrink-swell clay under the OKC metro.

By OKC Driveway Repair Co. · Updated October 16, 2026

**Short answer:** Polyurethane foam costs about $6 to $15 per square foot in Oklahoma City against $3 to $6 for mudjacking, but weighs a few pounds per cubic foot instead of about a hundred, uses ⅝-inch holes, and carries cars within an hour. On soft, wet clay foam usually lasts better; on firm soil, mudjacking is good value.

[OKC Driveway Repair Co.](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/) lifts sunken driveways with both methods across Oklahoma City, and quotes them side by side when both will work. Foam leveling vs mudjacking is mostly a question of what’s under your slab. Here’s how they compare, and why Oklahoma’s clay often decides it.

### Side by side

| | Polyurethane foam | Mudjacking |
| --- | --- | --- |
| OKC price (2026) | $6 – $15 per sq ft | $3 – $6 per sq ft |
| Material weight | A few pounds per cubic foot | Roughly 100 pounds per cubic foot |
| Hole size | About ⅝ inch | About 1½ inches |
| Drive on it | About 1 hour | About 24 hours |
| Precision | Lifts in small, controlled increments | Good, less fine control |
| Best soil | Soft, wet or compressible | Firm, with a defined void |

National numbers line up. HomeServe puts foam at roughly $5 to $25 per square foot, and Inch Calculator’s 2026 guide prices a 100 sq ft lift at $2,000 to $2,500 with foam against $300 to $800 with mudjacking.

### Why Oklahoma clay matters

Much of the metro sits on red clays like the Kirkland series, which the USDA rates high for shrink-swell. A sunken panel here usually sank because the soil under it was soft, wet or shrinking, not because a neat hole opened up.

**Weight is the difference.** Mudjacking slurry is heavy. Pumping it into a void on soft clay adds weight to the very soil that let the slab down, and that soil can keep compressing. Foam adds almost no weight, so it lifts the slab without loading the clay further. On soft, wet or previously settled ground, that’s why foam tends to last longer.

**On firm ground, mudjacking holds up well.** Where the soil is stable and the drop came from a void, such as a small washout that has been stopped, mudjacking fills and lifts at about half the price.

### When each one wins

**Choose foam when:**

- The soil is soft, wet or has settled before.
- The panel is at the garage, where loose backfill is common.
- You need the drive back the same day.
- Small, neat patches matter, such as on decorative concrete.

**Choose mudjacking when:**

- The soil is firm and the void has a clear, stopped cause.
- Budget is the deciding factor and the panel is in a low-traffic spot.
- The void is large and needs bulk fill.

**Choose neither when:**

- The panel is broken into pieces; it needs [replacement](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/concrete-driveway-repair/).
- The slab is pinned under the garage lip; see [driveway sinking at garage](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/sunken-driveway-at-garage-repair/).
- Water is still actively washing out soil; fix the [washout](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/driveway-washout-repair/) first.

### What makes either one last

The lift is only half the repair. Both methods fail early when water keeps getting under the slab. Seal the joints between lifted panels, move downspouts away from the drive, and fix any slope that sends runoff along the edge. Our [driveway leveling cost guide](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/guide/driveway-leveling-cost/) shows what those extras add.

### Bottom line

Mudjacking is cheaper; foam is lighter, faster and usually longer-lasting on Oklahoma’s soft clay. On firm soil with a stopped void, mudjacking is good value. ### Related questions

#### Is foam leveling waterproof?

Closed-cell lifting foams resist water absorption, which is one reason they hold up well under slabs. That doesn't stop water from washing out soil around the foam, so joints still need to be sealed and downspouts moved.

#### Can mudjacking be used again on a panel that was mudjacked before?

Yes, but repeated mudjacking adds more heavy slurry to the same soil. If a panel has needed lifting more than once, the soil or drainage underneath is the problem, and foam or a re-pour on a rebuilt base is usually the better fix.

#### Which method leaves smaller patches?

Foam. Its ports are about ⅝ inch across, against roughly 1½ inches for mudjacking, so the patches are far less visible.
