[OKC Driveway Repair Co.](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/) repairs and replaces driveway aprons across Oklahoma City, with the right-of-way permit pulled as part of the job. Driveway apron repair covers the approach between the sidewalk (or property line) and the street, plus its tie-in to the curb and gutter. A typical residential apron runs **$1,500 to $3,500**. It is the part of the drive most likely to need a city permit, and the part most often skipped by low bids.

### What happens on the first visit

- **Find the right-of-way line** and where the apron meets the sidewalk, curb and gutter.
- **Check the curb.** A cracked or sunken curb section changes how the apron must be formed and may need its own repair.
- **Check drainage.** The apron must carry water to the gutter, not back toward the garage.
- **Quote with the permit included** as its own line.

### The permit and who can pull it

Oklahoma City Code **§50-116** says no person shall “construct, replace or repair any sidewalk, curbs or driveways without a permit,” and **§50-117** issues that permit only to a licensed sidewalk or paving contractor. The approach sits in the city right-of-way, so this is the part of a driveway job those rules most clearly cover. We apply for the permit, schedule any required inspection, and build to the city’s details. Edmond, Norman, Moore and the other suburbs issue their own permits, and we confirm each city’s requirement before we schedule.

Our [Oklahoma City driveway permit guide](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/guide/driveway-permit-oklahoma-city/) covers the rules in detail, and [who is responsible for the driveway apron](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/guide/who-is-responsible-for-the-driveway-apron/) covers the ownership question.

### Why aprons fail first

The apron takes the hardest loads on the whole drive. Trash trucks, delivery vans and moving trucks turn across it, often with one set of wheels on the edge. It usually sits over **utility trench backfill** for water, sewer or gas lines, and that fill was often placed loosely. And it is where runoff from the street and the drive meet. The result is the classic sunken apron: a dip that scrapes bumpers, a crack along the gutter line, and water pooling at the curb.

### How we build an apron

1. **Saw-cut** at the property side and along the gutter line so neither the drive nor the street is damaged.
2. **Remove and dig out** the old apron and any soft trench backfill.
3. **Rebuild the base** with compacted crushed stone.
4. **Form to the curb** with the slope the city requires, so water drains to the gutter.
5. **Pour reinforced, air-entrained concrete** at least as thick as the drive, with **½-inch expansion joints** at the sidewalk and curb, matching the joint rule in OKC Code §50-103.
6. **Cure** with membrane curing compound, as §50-105 requires in the right-of-way, and barricade it for 7 days.

### Paying for it

The quote shows the apron, any curb work and the permit as separate lines. Oklahoma City’s Sidewalk Repair and Replacement Program shares the cost of qualifying sidewalk repairs 50/50 with property owners; it is aimed at sidewalks, so check its current rules for whether your approach qualifies. Our [driveway apron replacement cost guide](https://okcdrivewayrepairco.com/guide/driveway-apron-replacement-cost/) has the price breakdown.

### What's included

- Right-of-way line and curb condition checked on site
- Okie811 utility locate
- City right-of-way permit pulled and scheduled
- Saw-cut at the property side and the gutter line
- Base rebuilt with compacted crushed stone
- Reinforced concrete to the city's approach spec
- ½-inch expansion joints at the walk and curb

### Signs your apron needs repair

- The apron has dropped below the street gutter or the drive
- A bump or dip that scrapes the bottom of cars
- Broken concrete where the curb cut meets the street
- Water pooling at the curb instead of draining away
- A city notice about a damaged approach or sidewalk

### DIY patch vs the cheapest bid vs a driveway done properly

Most failed OKC drives didn't fail because of the concrete. They failed because of what's under it and what was skipped. Here's what to look for on any quote.

| What matters | DIY patch | Cheapest bid | Done properly |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Base | Patches over whatever is there | Native clay graded flat, little or no stone | Soft clay dug out; 4–6 in. compacted crushed stone |
| Concrete | Bagged mix, hand-mixed, no air | Spec not on the quote | 4,000–4,500 psi air-entrained ready-mix, in writing |
| Thickness | Whatever the bags cover | 4 in., often thinner at edges | 5 in. with thickened edges |
| Reinforcement | None | Mesh lying on the dirt | #3 rebar on chairs; dowels into old concrete |
| Joints | None | Tooled late or skipped | Saw-cut within 24 h to ¼ depth, ~10 ft apart; ½ in. expansion joints |
| Curing | Left to dry | Left to dry | Membrane curing compound; no cars for 7 days |
| Permit at the street | Skipped | Often skipped | Pulled per OKC Code §50-116 |
| Quote | — | One number, verbal | Written, itemized, per square foot |

### Driveway Apron Repair questions

#### Who is responsible for the driveway apron in Oklahoma City?

In most of Oklahoma City the apron sits in the public right-of-way, but the adjoining property owner is generally expected to maintain it. Any work on it needs a permit under OKC Code §50-116, and §50-117 limits that permit to licensed sidewalk and paving contractors. Our apron guide explains the exceptions.

#### Does the OKC Sidewalk Repair Program cover my apron?

The city's program shares the cost of qualifying sidewalk repairs 50/50 with the property owner when panels have settled or cracked past its thresholds. It is aimed at sidewalks, so check the program's current rules for whether your approach qualifies. We can quote the private portion either way.

#### Why does my apron sink but my driveway doesn't?

The apron usually sits over trench backfill from water, sewer or gas lines and takes the heaviest loads, such as trash trucks and delivery vans turning in. Backfill that was never compacted keeps settling for years. We dig it out and replace it with compacted stone before we pour.

#### How long until I can use the drive again?

Walk on the new apron after 24 hours and drive on it after 7 days. We leave a path to the garage open when the layout allows, or schedule the pour so you can park on the street for that week.

#### How fast can you come out?

We respond the same day you call during business hours, and most estimates are on site within 1–2 business days. Washouts, collapsed panels and trip hazards on commercial property are triaged first through our emergency driveway repair line.
